help needed for my vauxhall corsa

hi can anyone help! I have an S Reg Vauxhall corsa 1.2. The engine light has come on and remains on on my dash. When not moving but with engine on the car sounds as if it is revving and i can see the rev counter moving.In the lower gears the car is kangarooing but once i hit 4th all ok (but light still on) I know I probably need to go to a garage but know nothing about cars and do not want to be ripped off. Has anyone encountered similar and is it a big expensive job to get fixed. Any help on this would be appreciated (my 3 kids rely on that old car to get to cubs, football, drama, playgruop etc.)

If the management light is on you will need to the car to a garage with proper diagnostic equipment to get the fault code/s read - will usually charge a fee just for reading the fault codes and then depending on the code, parts and labour - could just be a duff sensor somewhere.
