However, it was, as you will see if you click here. That will link you to a web-page which deals with the kings of Scotland. Once there, scroll down to the section headed 'Macbeth (1040 - 1057)'.
Macbeth himself does say in the play: "By Sinel's death I know I am Thane of Glamis", so - since it would surely have passed to a son - it's hard to see how he could have acquired the title other than by inheritance...ie Sinel was Macbeth's father.
