Hi, I have been given an old metal wheelbarrow and am thinking of planting it up. Not sure on how to go about it. I know that I need to make holes in the bottom to allow drainage, but what should I do about painting it? The tyre is in good condition but the wheelbarrow needs freshening up colourwise. Any ideas would be appreciated. What sort of paint should I use, and should I line the base with anything? Should I also paint the inside?
Many thanks for your help.

Hi,

Just drill the holes and paint the outside and in spring fill with compast and put bulbs and small budding plants in it and enjoy it all summer.

We do ours every year.

Hi Salas,
many thanks for your answer. Can you tell me what paint to use, should I use a gloss paint or do I need one to cover metal? What colour is your wheelbarrow or is it au naturel?
Jeanette
Hi Jeanette,

We just painted ours with old gloss, we coloured it a cream colour then painted little flowers on it using other glosses that we had and a few little match pots from B&Q as they are cheap.

The barrow then looks ok in winter when there is nothing in it.

When you plant if you use bulbs then these will grow again and again year after year.

Hi Salsa,
again many thanks. Am looking forward to this project. Now have to decide what colour to paint it. Will do the handles a different colour. Still have to work out whereabouts to put it in the garden. Thank you for your help.
