School gardening club...lost
Hi there all, i have recently started a lunchtime gardening club at my sons school in an effort to improve the schools recent decline and to get the children involved in something creative. The problem is that although the children absolutely love it there is a lack of support from other parents. I am very keen and have been putting in a lot of hard graft but am quite lost. At present we have cleared nearly all the weeds from the junior kids playground and i don't really know where to go next. Any help/advice very gratefully recieved.

Maybe start planning for next year by planting in pots, gro-bags, plastic seed trays etc. Get in touch with local garden centres, who may be able to help you. Bear in mind that your son will move on, so dont be too ambitous at first. If it looks as tho help is at hand and the project will continue, then you can start planning for a 'real' garden and this is where the children come into their own. They just love designing and seeing the work physically take shape. At this stage, you will need funds and you will find the children will also love raising money to fund the project. Be prepared for 'red tape' and health and safety issues. Voluntary labour is OK, but notoriously unreliable and the last thing you want is for the project to run out of steam, so dont be frightened to get in professional help. We have worked on many school projects, doing the graft and getting things moving. There are also grants available. Cory Environmental can be very helpful. Sorry this is a bit long winded, but good luck gem., hope it works out well.
