I'm writing a paper on the public perception of paedophilia and I want to know what people think. I'd like reasoned opinions please, rather than striaghtforward dismissal / revulsion. Think about why you think the way you do, if any particular incidents (in the media, or that you have heard of elsewhere etc) stand out, when you first remember forming an opinion on this subject. I'd also like to know some brief details about you (married/single, if you have children, your gender and age) and most importantly, what newspapers (if any) you regularly read. Thanks all - I think this could prove a very interesting thread, so here's hoping!

I first recall forming an opinion on paedophilia when with the onset of puberty came the slow realisation that I had been the victim of a paedophile. At the age of 9 I had no idea what was happening but luckily the other girl involved made a seemingly innocuous remark to her dad who as an adult knew precisely what had been going on.I only recall him coming into my house with a shotgun (it was an aquaintance known to both families) and the police gently asking us questions. He was jailed I found out later.
I can honestly say that it has not had any profound effect on my life apart from being more vigilant-and therein lies another experience when my neighbour (who had served 4yrs for sexual offences relating to 14yr old girls) tried to entice my daughter out her bedroom window late at night with lewd remarks -she was smart enough to immediately alert me and I caught him still in the garden, still trying to get her.He was found guilty as well.I only relate those experiences as I have first hand experience.
Paodophiles in my opinion are not mentally instable in their opinion. They firmly believe that what they are doing is normal and cant understand why we are repulsed by it.They possibly think we are abnormal.
Paedophiles will never be rehabilitated -in my experience they are arrogant ba$tards who think they are being treated unjustly. My neighbour being a perfect example -he is currently on a curfew awaiting yet another trial for approaching another young girl (luckily like my daughter she was physically unharmed) however he has the audacity to put those young girls through the trauma of a court case.
I am 47 female 2 children married read local daily newspaper.

Wow Drisgirl, hell of a story. At least you came through it relatively unscathed and your daughter wasn't harmed.
I have read all the replies from all you 'liberals' with interest on this subject. I would like to know how all you people who believe child molesters should be treated with 'compassion and treatment' react to these two items of fact

1. my best friend of over 20 years recently committed suicide because of systematic and repeated abuse by a family member. she had also tried several times throughout her teens and twenties and had been sectioned on many occasions. This man had also prevented her from having any sort of decent loving relationship with ANY man

2. My father was a DCI on the Serious Crime Squad for many years until his recent retirement. He dealt with all the worst possible cases you can imagine - rape, murder, child abuse etc etc and in a recent conversation he admitted he has seen many HUNDREDS of dead bodies. However, there is one horrific case which has affected him over and above anything else he has ever dealt with. in his younger days, reacting to a tip off from a concerned neighbour, he and his colleage broke down a door (because of a child's screams) to find a man sodomising his 12 MONTH old daughter watched by 3 other men whilst ' pleasuring themselves'. I will not go into details what happened to these men.

The men in both of these cases were not 'mentally disturbed' in any way and had decent, well paid jobs and were respected men in the community who had the intelligence and deceitfulness to hide their sick perversions from society.

I would like to know how many people who have children of their own would like paedophiles to be treated with respect and tolerance.
fairkatrina- As I have stated I believe paedophilia to be something within you like being bi, hetro or gay so I do not blame society.

But I do think that children are loosing their sense of innocence and that the some people who cry for blood when readiing about a crime against a child will happily ogel the Olsen twins and see no problem with that.... I have issues with the sexualisation (again, no idea if that's a word) of children.

foxy, I'm not entirely sure who you're addressing but to answer your question as best I can. Firstly, I did not say respect or tolerence but I did imply some sort of understanding. As stated, if there was a forum for these people to receive some sort of suppressent and be watched and monitored then if it prevents just one person from goiing through what your friend and that baby did I think it would be worth it. I advocate trying to prevent it from happening in the first place.

I would rather have not had to learn as much about sexual abuse of children as I have been forced to and the many faces an abuser can have. I can honestly say that I would rather have not had to go through what I did and watch a person I cared deeply go through what they did. Perhaps if it were not so taboo to talk about, neither of us would have had to.

Also, if as a society we adopt the lynching them approach then they're hardly going to be volunteering themselves out of the woodwork and the only time we'll know about it is when it's too late and some other kid has had their life damaged.
Any sexual crimes just make me want to throw up, frankly, i wont go into personal reasons.

Paedphiles are sickening because I dont believe there is a way out of it, their wiring circuitry is all wrong, they will re-offend at every opportunity, children are the most vulnerable and possibly most trusting in our world and cannot defend themselves, as some adults would be able to do. The fact that some of these offenders could cause so much harm to the littlest babies is beyond comprehension.
And due to 'human rights' they can serve a short sentence then sneak around our communities where we are unware of the danger. When they commit these crimes they should cease their entitlement to any rights, for crimes against others' human rights.
Age 42, divorced, no kids.
Because their crimes are horrific and they cause serious damage therefore we should not attempt to understand the root causes of their behaviour, especially if there emerges evidence that a lot of them may have brain abnormalities that treatment can fix???????????????????
No. Deny it without evidence, put them behind bars for a few years, then do not treat them, watch them reoffend. If you blinker your eyes to the truth and deny them treatment that may stop them behaviour then to an extent you share some blame for their crimes.
Some insights into the paedophile condition appear in Iain Brimswall's "Missed Chapters". See
