Chasing Away The Christians?
19 Answers
Wizard 69 asked recently, what was wrong with the R & S topic? He likened it to being as dry as a .... whatever.
The consensus appeared to be that you all agreed with each other so there was nothing ot debate.
Fair enough.
So, does this topic only exist to educate posters on the 'foolishness' of anything spiritual, or does it serve another purpose?
It reminds me sometimes of the cyber equivalent of the Inquisition, where a Bible believer is pilloried en masse.
Or am I just being paranoid?

Its just that you all often f*ck off when challenged. (for instance....have you answered Mcfroog's question from february of this year yet?) And dont say that you've been busy because you have had plenty of time posting on here when you could have been researching the answer...or maybe you couldnt find one?
Oh, so I'm just being paranoid.
Well that's a relief, I thought I was one of the hated ones for daring to espouse a view other than the general consensus.
Other Christians who have posted on here are long gone, probably never to return, and judging by the tone of some of the posts, it's easy to understand why, so leaving the topic as dry as ...... as you said.

jj2006 - It would be a pity if you refrained from posting on here.
I for one would be delighted to discuss my beliefs with you, and there are others who would too.
Wizard says, "If you can't stand the heat ... " but there doesn't have to be any heat, not in a general discussion.
I am being rather selfish, I know, but I confess to enjoying the challenging learning curve that this site provides.
O.K. nobody has shaken my faith to the point of me abandoning it, but I am not afraid to question my own beliefs. That can't be a bad thing can it?

I was an athiest, but recently had an experience that made me realise that there is more out there and I'm sort of exploring Christianity now.
The thing that really puts me off posting is that most of the questions on here are so obviously deliberately loaded just to mock and attack anyone who has a faith. From what I have seen there is very little objective argument in this section, mainly just playground stuff.
I don't want to get in battles with people and face personal attacks. So I don't think this website is for me.

Stay around JJ.
I am in exactly the same position as you, that of researching.
I agree with you that the majority of posts on here are of the sneering mocking variety, you can sense the anger amongst the intellectuals that people like us have the effrontery even to exist. Stick around please, these angry ones need to be prodded and irritated.

jj2006.
You have to start growing some layers. You say you had an 'experience'. Well, that's good for you yes??? There are many people on here that have also had 'experiences'. They all come out in the wash eventually.
Read all posts slowly. Do not take offence at other peoples opinions.
Have your own. :)

JJ2006 - Yes, this web site IS for you, not only for what YOU can get out of it, but for what we can get out of your contributions.
Everybody has a fascinating story to tell, or if you like, a testimony. For unbelievers, their reasons for their unbelief are as legitimate and as interesting as our conversion accounts.
And hey! Just as you will find something that stirs you up, you will undoubtedly stir up some thoughts in others that may help them in their spiritual search.
And if you feel exhausted, you can always take time out on the new Chatterbank topic, and discuss the merits or otherwise of Jammy Dodgers!

If anyone is seeking a forum where only those of a like mind are posting, go and find one. There will be plenty regardless of your point of view. The Answerbank is not one of these, and therefore you may expect to find all views represented and the distinct possibility that no view will go unchallenged.
There is certainly no special get-out-of-jail-free dispensation for religion to avoid being placed under the same scruntiny as, say, politics.

Giving us facts about our own beliefs boils down quite often to you quoting from whatever sources you have discovered that are at odds with our own sources.
Similarly, your reliance on mans supposed ability to be able to understand all things, if only he were given the facts, is at odds with our belief that man has limited understanding, and is quite incapable of being able to grasp such concepts as, "nothing," and, "eternity," the perpetual state from which the big bang, or grand expansion, call it what you will, arose.
Somebody quoted Einstein the other day to support an atheist view, but then Einstein
also said at some point, "God doesn't play dice."
So there is an example of tow quotes from the same source to support different views.

That's a failure to understand how Einstein was using the word 'God', Theland, though he undoubtedly muddied the waters. He wasn't, however, an atheist, but in his own words an agnostic. To me, a lot of what he says seems Deist.
When Einstein spoke of God, it was in the sense of Spinoza's God: essentially just nature - magnificent and wonderous, but absolutely not a Theistic, personal god as conceived in Christianity.
"I believe in Spinoza's God, who reveals Himself in the lawful harmony of the world, not in a God Who concerns Himself with the fate and the doings of mankind."
"My position concerning God is that of an agnostic. I am convinced that a vivid consciousness of the primary importance of moral principles for the betterment and ennoblement of life does not need the idea of a law-giver, especially a law-giver who works on the basis of reward and punishment."
There's some useful stuff here:

I find it rather sad that someone like myself has to defend you from your "brother in christ" (Mani Insane).
I wish I knew what planet that man was from.
But something about the danish cartoon thread tonight has brought back a lot of long forgotten memories of when I was looking into various faiths and philosophies and its made me feel quiet sad. Why ?
Because I knew an awful lot of people from an awful lot of faiths. A lot of these people became my friends overtime in spite of my scepticism. One church that I attended (of the charismatic variety) appeared (at least on the outward) to be a very tight knit community. Full of love for each other, together in god...that kind of stuff. It almost made me want to sacrifice my reason and intellect and join in.
25 years on and almost no original members exist (although they still have a church of around 2000). Most of these ex members have shown that despite the 'facade' of spirituality and oneness and love for each other, it was all a sham. It just reminds me of the christians on here who all brown nose each other when it suits, but when the real person comes out, it all falls apart.
I just find it sad how religion makes a mess of everything, especially peoples relationships.
