Women used their sleeves for holding small personal items and men suspended items from the sash that was wrapped around the kimono. To stop the cord from slipping, a small toggle was attached, and this is called a NETSUKE (pronunced "net-ski"). These were made out of wood or ivory and intricately and beautifully carved, and they are highly collectable and can have huge value.
