Why are earwigs called earwigs? Do they actually go in your ear?

I have a really itchy ear right inside my ear and someone at work has said I might have an earwig living in there!

Do you think I have and if not what is it?

It definitely won't be an earwig, but it could be a small spider. It'll come out when it's fed up.
