Hi There, a colleague of mine has an unhealthy obession with using the pharse "touch base" (I counted ten in one day once).I have no idea what it means and I think it is one of those stupid pharses that people use for no real reason. I was wondering if anybody knew what it meant and where it comes from?? Also am I worse for counting up the number of times he uses it??

Hi, 'we'll touch base' means, quite simply, we'll talk to each other or at least we'll contact each other later. You're not on your own in objecting to the over use of this, and all the other management jargon tosh that these people use.

Cheers

Thanks - I'm glad I'm not the only one!!
It is irritating, but not as bad as the repeated use of the non-existent term "Pharse".
I presume it comes from the American version of 'rounders'...baseball...in which players have to 'touch base' as they run around the pitch. It seems an accurate and harmless enough americanism, though - like anything else - when it's overdone it can no doubt become irritating.
