bit confused, so was he kept in the flat as a prisoner all the time. How did he eat? Why didn't he escape out of the main door, or the glass window?

Yes but why couldn't he get out the front door? He wasn't tied up or anything. He must have been able to find something to lever the door with.

all the windows and doors were covered with grills, like when the council close up a property they aren't using for the time being. He had water and biscuits in the cupboard.
