What is 17a? A large headed elongated marine fish (4).
I have ?a?e. I can only think of HAKE but all the descriptions I can find do not fit the clue. There is also GADE but, again, the description does not fit the clue.
Any ideas/help anyone. Gratefully received.

Hake is large headed and elongated.

Thanks for the response. I guess it all depends on your definition of 'large'.
The Gade is a small fish. There is also the Dace, but I'll go for Hake.
Britannica On-line gives Hake as a large-headed elongated fish, so think it is probably hake
