difficult to give you only a clue ...

the word 'direct' is from the Latin 'Di + regere'

I think that the word you are looking for is more likely to be from the Italian (ie Latin word) word 'dirigismo'..

so, if i was hunting further for the answer ... I would look up in a good dictionary (eg Chambers) words beginning with the letters ' dirigi ' ......


and, you will find your answer!!
Be careful Lottiegirl the other part of the question says the word was "coined by French scholars"
