acer laptop disk trauma!

Hi, today my acer laptop took 7 hours to check file system on C: stating one of my disks need to be checked for consistency...
After 7 long hours it went back to normal - where have I gone wrong? I have not downloaded or changed anything - any suggestions on how to stop this occuring again?
I only use my laptop to occasionally surf ebay etc., should I be 're-formatting' or whatever every month to ensure the health of my laptop?
Any suggestions so gratefully received!!

What's probably happened is that the machine didn't close down properly. The next time you started it the laptop decided to do a full system check.

If this happens again there should be an option to say No - I don't want a full system check.
