Connecting Digital TV to video

My problem is I have a portable TV in a bedroom with 1scart plug. I have got a digital box with 2 scart plugs. I also have a VCR and a DVD player. The VCR only has 1 scart plug also.
As it is at the moment, I can only record programmes when the TV is on. I am sure there is a way of recording without the TV being on but can't seem to find it.
Any ideas?
