Is Israel to do nothing in the face of these rocket attacks for fear of upsetting human rights groups?
What else can they do?

The clue is in the first paragraph Theland.

..."particularly provocative given that Palestinians and Israelis are meeting to negotiate an agreement on the core issues for ending the conflict between them."

The rockets are used to try and end the peace talks. In the face of these attacks, Israel should double their efforts to make sure a peace deal is thrashed out. That way the people launching the rockets will have failed in their aim.

Israel has tried to use it's military might for 30 years to beat the Palestinians and have failed. A negotiated settlement is the only way forward, but there will be elements on both sides who will do anything they can to prevent a peace deal. They must not be aloud to wreck the process.
The UK tried to solve the Irish problem for decades without success. Now there is peace. Why? Because before the recent settlement the IRA were left out of the peace process.
The Israeli problem needs a similar solution. As well as speaking to Fatah they also need to engage Hamas.
As simple as that!
Good question Theland,
As things stand, palestine still has 'The Destruction of Israel' as a mandate.
While it has this, the peace talks can come to nothing, and even as part of the talke, Paestine removes it, it won't stop the rockets. certain Palestinian factions will still keep doing it, the goverment won't be able to stop it.

To address the question, far sighted Ben Gurion had it right, a conclusion that its taken me a long time to come to.

To have peace for Israel, Palestine will have to be destroyed, but if that were to happen now, the consequences would be too terrible to imagine.

I think in reality, the only way to stop it, is to get the Iran to pressure them, but I can't see it happening.

As I thought. The trap into which we fall is thinking that we are dealing with reasonable people. We are not. It is not politics, it is religion. The constitutions of the various muslim organisations contain the destruction of israel as their non negotiable aim.
Peace talks? Phooey!
Theland

If you deny peace then you have to accept your enemies are going to try and harm you with the rockets.
yeah i agree with gromit. Israel is a terrorist state. They should just leave.
Putting them in amongst their enemies on their enemies land was the dumbest thing ever. They should have put them in Siberia or somewhere.

It's all about groups now. In this group, not in that group. When palestine strikes israel, they are striking at the west, who in recent years have been striking their brothers. It's not about israel-palestine no more. It's about Middle East v the West.
Thanks George........
meredith,
A question,

Would you mind explaining what you meant by 'they should have put them in Siberi or somewhere?.

Historically, where would you put a Jewish homeland?, Don't forget, even though Isreal would probably have happened, it was hastened by the perscution of Jews not just by Germany, and not on the same scale, by most of the Western countries, including Britain, who, incidentally, turned a blind eye to the death camps.

I have relations in Israel, and don't forget, Israeli Arabs have the same rights as Israel Jews, and in some cases more, which is more than can be said in reverse.

This doesn't make the news over here, but Arabs in their traditional dress carry knives, and when passing a Jew, bring out the knife and stab him/her.
Doesn't happen often, but it does happen on a regular basis.
Lonnie

What planet are you from, making rash statements, such as, "Israeli Arabs have the same rights as Israeli Jews". What balderdash. Certain amount of truth in what Meredith says. I don't know about Siberia but in my view they should never have been given a State .... not on the basis of religion. Which other religion was afforded this priviledge. We know about the "holocaust" and the 5 million or so Jews but what about the 50 million or so non-Jews. The means of their passing was not the same but just as terrible .... Japanese in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Germans in Dresden. The Palestinians have had a raw deal for decades and all down to the State of Israel being set up in their back garden.
"Israel should double their efforts to make sure a peace deal is thrashed out."... sadly, two times zero is still zero. Israel only wants peace if it doesn't have to give anything in return. That's not how you make a deal.

Cugetit,
The same planet as you my friend, one where humans the world over can't live together.

In answer though, have you ever lived in Israel, as I said, I have family over there, and visit occasionally, and I know first and second hand whats happening, and what i've said is the truth, Israeli Arabs, not others.

if you like, I could go back to some of the most terrible massacres in history to help you prove a point, some of which is still happening, and not in the Middle East.

As for truth, its whatever you want it to be, thats the truth,

But you have your viewpoint, and your welcome to it.

jno,
You have a valid point, but on the other hand, The Palestinians want peace, so long as they don't change that bit of the mandate.
Lonnie, I think a two-state solution is the only way forward. Considering it used to be the Palestinians' homeland, and is now the Israelis', I think it's fair to say the Palestinians have given up everything and the Israelis so far have given up nothing. But the Israelis' building of walls and settlements indicates that they want more, not less. I can't see that this will ever lead to peace.
How about recognising the democratically elected government of Palestine for a start?
jno,
That is one solution, if it coud work, but obviously there are fanatics on both sides who want to wreck any peace deals, I do recognise that, and at present they are both succeeding. I personally, while wishing for peace, doubt it will happen in my lifetime, mainly because of the two factions i've indicated, but biased I am, more so because of that mandate.
