catagory D write off
I just bought a car privatly without a HPI. I was a bit worried about it and now have HPI'd it to find out is was CAT D write off. Do I have any come back on previous seller for not telling me??

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I think its a case of buyer beware but then if you asked him if it had been in an accident & been repaired & he said 'no' then obviously you would have to prove that he knew of the damage. Maybe it was done before he actually bought the car? If you go onto Google & type in bought written off car you will see lots of info which should be useful. hope this helps.
Category D normally means that the insurer deemed it uneconomical to repair. The damage would have been cosmetic rather than structural, but associated costs of the claim (e.g. providing a courtesy car for the duration of the repairs) made repairs too expensive an option. It's very likely that the previous owner was unaware of the car's status, as CAT D cars do not need to be re-registered by DVLA.
