Your best education will come from the ebay forums, and buying and selling low value goods so you can see how it all works.
There are lots of forums - here's one:

Hi Dee Sa,
We were all beginners at some point so don't feel as though you are the only one. I bought a book called ebay UK edition in easy steps by Nick Vandome the ISBN number is 1-84078-286-2 (see if your local library can get it in for you, or see if they have any other similar books, there are a few on this subject). I read it through a few times, signed up with ebay and paypal and got started. It is quite easy. There are also question and answer forums (just like this one) where you type in a question if you get stuck on anything, and you get replies from other ebay members who help you.
The first thing you also need to do, is learn how to take a decent photo (by using your digital camera) of the item you want to sell and learn how to download the picture/s to your computer. Most people usually start by just listing up one item (say an unwanted book or item of clothing). Sell that, collect in the money and take it slowly. Don't start off by selling something really big and expensive. The easiest way to learn is to do it and gain experience as you go along. Just like using this site.

many, many tks to all for the help & advice, being a "true to form " dummy. I shall have to get a digital camera and learn that bit first ! and I shall enlist the help of our local library [ they really are good I hope the govt doesnt decide to close them].

Hello Dee - all the advise before is good - one point!!!! unfortunately bad ebayers come in all sorts of colours and varieties!!! Having been at it for some time - my suggestion to you is to start: - one by registering your own site - two: have your bank card/details to hand to create your paypal account - all instructed step by step and before you spend any money on cameras and such like - have a search through other peoples sites and buy a few little things - find out about bidding and losing and about 'buy it now' and shops, find out about waiting for the postman and receiving parcels and about feedback - you choose how long you spend in doing this - but this will make you a responsible ebayer when you understand what your 'customer's' feel and want! hard headed sellers have no place on ebay - it should be a friendly experience!!! and when you feel you are ready check an ebay site ( or elsewhere) and buy yourself a digital camera - go for as good as you can afford as this is your selling tool to earn you as much as you can from each sale!!!! and from there Good Luck!!!! and you never know in the in between time you might buy one of my wonderful books!!!!
