my son downloded an update for windows media player.Now, every time we turn on the computer , the media player loads automatically and takes pride of place slap in the middle of the desk top display.How can we stop it loading automatically? Plain language please, I'm a real computer dunce.

it sounds like you have it set to 'automatically open on start-up'.im not sure of the exact instruction but in your systray(bottom right-hand corner of your screen) should be the player icon.right-click and you should get 'options'.in there you should find a tick box stating the above.un-tick it and this should stop your problem
 if this is player 10 then i can help. i just downloaded this version and your problem didnt hapn to me  it may be a fault in downloading or your comp  or, hey mabe mine is faulty!!
go to start, run, type in "msconfig" go to start up and look for that program. uncheck it. the computer will restart then check the box that pops up for system configuration utility. hope that helps.
Its simple. every one's post in this section is WRONG. Click START>PROGRAMS>STARTUP. it should say in there windows media player. RIGHT CLICK ON IT AND PRESS DELETE. it will stop it from starting up at start up. let us know how it goes.

Started working my way through your sloutions.Didn't have the player icon on my systray so couldn't use Mattks way.

But hey. peanut, a great big THANKS. You seem to have sorted it for me. Never got to try BRFCCs solution so dont know if it would have worked. Thanks anyway.
