Has he always been able to fly? I heard recently that originally he couldn't.

I am guessing like all things he had to learn first. Bit like walking and talking.

Cheers MrsC, but I was wondering whether the character when he was first created could fly or if it was a superpower he was given later by other writers.
Originally, Supes could only "leap tall buildings at a single bound", and this only gradually changed to the ability to fly: http://theages.superman.ws/Encyclopaedia/powers.php#speed
If you have a look at Picture 5 at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/3732504.stm, it tells you that "the original cartoon character could not fly but Reeve's portrayal enhanced the cartoon hero's superstar status." Don't really know what it means... but hope it helps!
ahhhhhhhhhh lol!! see you learn something new everyday! Rest in peace Christopher reeve, we will miss you.
hang on a second what do you mean 'rest in peace'has he passed away?
Yes, miss, he has. Click here.
IndieSinger...how do you do that 'click here' thing that has a link to a webpage in it? Thats cool.
When he first appeared in the late 1930 he could" leap tall buildings at a single bound"( It would be hard to do it in two bounds methinks) and outrun a locomotive (train) but he couldnt fly
