Honda Prelude tickover

I've got an old Honda Prelude (E - 87). When the auto choke is on the engine pulses, when it warms up and the choke is off the tickover is fine. Is it a sensor of some sort? (I don't have a manual) Any ideas?

at a guess I would say the fast idle is not working (manual linkage between choke and throttle). When the choke is on, the engine idle speed needs to be increased to prevent it from choking/stalling.

thanks, but I don't think it is that, the tickover rises and falls (as if hunting), imagine a manual choke being switched on for a second and then off for a second - it's like that! The car doesn't stall when it dips either.

Not sure whether it's the same thing but I had a Cavalier years ago, and it would always cut out just after starting up. It turned out that the casing for the sensor had cracked and was letting the damp and cold in making the sensor think that the engine was colder than it was. The engine kept getting more fuel than was nessecary, the engine would get warm, when the engine cooled, the cycle began again...Nightmare but at least it was cheap to fix!
