thought to be a Pagan ritual from the 17th century that cleanses the streets of evil spirits.

I can't believe it can still take place what with all health and safety and insurance issues. It gets sooo packed and it's hard to move out the way when there's a huge flaming barrel coming straight for you! It's strangely quite fun though...

It's fantastic! As a spokesman said, if you think it's too dangerous for you, stay away.
In towns where there are apparently dangerous traditions, there is little or no vandalism, the youth of the area have other ways to prove their bravery.
Everything now is so sanitised and neutered, fear of minor injuries or, worse, compensation claims means the verve is being snuffed out.
Long may it continue, long may the H&S be kept away to areas where their work can be positive not unwarranted.

I live in Ottery St Mary. Tar Barrells are great. It is such fun you should try it. All the kids that do it love it and there barrels are so small. Hardly anyone gets hurt some burns on the next sometimes but thats about it. You have a massive Bonfire and the fair there aswel. Its a good night out.

Hey dizzy_girl, didn't realise there was someone on here quite so close to me! I'm not in Ottery...but only a few minutes drive away!

Although I haven't been to the tar barrells in a couple of years, it's something I think people should go to once, just to see what it's like. But then again, I can totally understand if having someone running straight towards you with a huge flaming barrell is not your cup of tea...
