I'd like to store some of my favourite movies on my laptop - I know there are copyright problems, but is there any way of legally doing it?

As long as you own the DVD and aren't renting it or borrowing it from someone, I belive you can do it legally.

but how do I do it?
Dowload copying software such as dvd shrink or dvd decrypter.

Although this is a guide to copying a dvd. You can use the first part of the process to copy to your hard drive.
If you're in the UK it is still technically illegal to copy even movies you own to your hard disk. (In the US and some other countries there is a "fair use" clause that allows you to make a back up). Last time I heard there was talk of changing this rather archaic law, but I'd bet that the record and movie companies will bribe (sorry, campaign to) MPs to prevent any change.

PS: Unless you're planning to watch different movies on the go, even compressed films will take up a heck of a lot of space on your laptop.
