Matter bends the 'fabric' of space, causing light to bend with it in order to take the shortest path. To visualise this, imagine a sheet of material held taught at all four corners. If you roll an object across it (to symbolise travelling light) is follows a certain path. However if you then roll an object across the sheet again with another object on top of the sheet (to represent matter) the object representing light will always roll towards the object.
