A Proxy server is a local deveice between you and the Internet and is a server that gathers your requests for pages and maybe caches the results and serves them to you, usually through one local IP address. It deals with all the DNS requests and ping ponging across the Net and just gives you and the rest of your local nework the pages you request through a router.
< P>If you are not on a local network with a proxy server then you can ignore or switch off this setting. Most home broadband networks will have a firewall with Network Address Translation that appears from the user's point of view to be similar to a proxy, but you enter the NAT router address as a gateway IP address not a proxy.
