Transferring everything from one laptop to another...?

Hi,
I have got a new laptop and would like to transfer all my documents, files and some programs etc - well most of it actually - from my old machine, over to my new one.... how can I do this?

the old one is winxp and the new is vista

in laymans terms please, lol!

easiest way is to make sure all your docs / files / pics are in the My Documents folder on the XP machine. Plug a USB pen drive into a spare USB slot (1GB drve shoulnt cost more than about �8 these days ) Right click on the My Docs folder and select copy. Now open the USB device and select paste, all your files will now be copied onto the USB drive. If they won't all fit then you'll have to to it a few files at a time. Plug the USB pen in to your Vista machine, open the USB device select all the files copy and paste into their new location.
To transfer programs you will need to check if they ae compatible with Vista first. If they are then simply install from the original disc on the new machine.
