Hi, I have been off with work related stress for 5 weeks, due to staff shortages etc (1st time off sick in 14 years) I am signed back to work but my boss says he does not want me to return to my position "for my own welfare and health"? He has had his favourite in and he has run it differently to me and he prefers it that way , he has suggested that he cannot legally stop me from going back to my old position but wants me to take a lesser role, or pack in completely , I feel completely refreshed and ready to take my role back up, however he has said if i do go back to my position he will actively manage me and this could result in poor performance leading to disciplinary action being taken if I don't do it as the other manager has done he has totally focused on my negatives and not on the larger positives i do, ...any ideas out there as to how to progress this ?? or should i call it a day and be done with this bully boss??

Ask him to put his proposals in writing and say you will take legal advice. The man is a bully

If he has performance issues with your work then there must be formal capability procedures in place to deal with that so that you can be coached to reach the standard required.

If you leave there would be no guarantee of a decent reference so be careful.
Maybe he's not a bully and maybe its for your own good, just a thought? If youve been suffering from work related stress are you sure this is really the job for you now? Whats to say you wont get stressed again by the role? Five weeks off work sick is quite a long time so it must have been serious. It sounds like he may have found someone more suitable in the meantime but maybe it's for your own good not to go back into the same role that made you sick?
Hello?

Proper jobs do as a matter of course carry a level of stress

The only people who dont suffer stress at work are the ones who couldnt care less

Glad you are not in this category

Five weeks off seems more of a serious problem, presumably you expected your work to be performed by someone else in that time

That is a risk to take

Looks like your efforts were not appreciated despite you 'getting all stressed out' , pitching yourself at a lower level might be good sense

I thank you all for your input on this matter , had a meeting with him and he says if I pack it in he will make a position for me which would last for 4 months giving me time to re train and apply for jobs within this large company , I will be making a decision on this real soon ,

Any further ideas would be very much appreciated as sometimes you can blinded by your own thoughts and need outside input to progress rational thinking .... .......

Hi all, to let you have closure on this , I stepped down from big manager to under manager , feel much better to let someone else be in the firing line, money is not everything , its important to be happy , be able to sleep at night and relax when you are at home,

a lesson to everyone, don't let stress get on top of you , !! unfortunately easier said than done,
Thank you again for your input on this matter
