We are getting a wooden floor in. Our room is 6 metres by 3 metres approximately. To work out the square metres of wood required is it a matter of just multiplying the 2 numbers? So would 18 square metres of wood be enough for the room?

You need to take into account that flooring is laid like bricks, meaning that the end of each plank runs down to the middle of the adjoining plank in the next row. This will also mean that it is highly likely that on rows 2,4,6,8,etc, you will have to cut the planks at both ends of the room, and in rows 1,3,5,7,etc, you will only have to cut the plank at one end.
