Slow boots

I have free Norton security following the upgrade of my BT Broadband package
Since the upgrade I have experienced two annoying problems
(1) I am continually reminded to RUN LIVE UPDATE which eventually fails with the message " Installing Firewall update - errors occurred during update installation failed LU1812." Thus despite daily attempts to run the live update I am unable to achieve this
(2) When booting up my laptop takes a lifetime . I seem unable to reach my home page until the Norton symbol appears on the taskbar. This can take 10 minutes.
Is it possible the two problems are related and have any other Bt Yahoo/Norton users had similar problems?
Help appreciated

There are viruses that do less damage than Norton.
Get rid of it, and see Ethel's link in a reply to the following question to get software that is free, reliable, and unobtrusive.
