selfish?
I do not believe in caged birds either & like to see them flying freely. But the people who do keep them in aviaries/cages are not intentially being cruel, they are usually very caring people. My Mum had a budgie called - yes you've guessed it - Joey. He was a happy little sole, who chatted & chirped away all day & kept her company after Dad died - ah!
My mum adopted two African Grey parrots when their previous owners got fed up with them.  They are out of the cage most of the time, but if they feel nervous or scared they will break the doors down to get back into their cage.  I guess I would call her a bird keeper....?
A sadist  - for locking up the poor birdies who want to be free and roam the skies!!!

bernadette - Although I wouldn't keep caged birds, I wouldn't have called my Mum a Sadist for keeping a Budgie for company! Thanks for that!

Also, this is a bit of a contradiction to the comments you made on A&N 'Do fish feel pain'!
