expanding brackets (maths)

okay i know this lol but my minds gone completely blank if i wanted to expand (2n+1) + (2n+1) what would it be? so far i've got 4n squared +1 , but now my minds gone blank and i don't knwo the rest :-!

(2n+1) + (2n+1) doesn't equal 4n squared anything. It's a plus, not a multiplication. Your answer is 2(2n+1) or 4n+2

If you meant to multiply, the answer is as follows:
(2n+1) x (2n+1) =
(2n x 2n)+(2n x 1)+(1 x 2n)+(1x1) =
4n^2 + 2n + 2n +1 =
4n^2 + 4n +1

(Note: ^ = power of, so 4n^2 = 4n squared.)

Assuming that you had intended to multiply the contents of the two brackets you might consider the method of Lefts Rights Inners Outers.
( 2n+1 )( 2n+1 )
Multiply the items on the left of each bracket. 2nx2n=4n*
Multiply the items on the right of each bracket +1x+1=+1
Multiply the inners i.e. the centre items +1x+2n=+2n
Multiply the outers i.e. the first and last items 2nx+1=+2n
Combine these last two results by addition +2n++2n=+4n
Write down the results of the first, second and last lines.
This gives 4n* +1 +4n.
Rearrange as 4n* +4n +1
Homework! Try ( 3n+2 )( 2n+5 ) ( 2n+5 )( 3n-2 )
