Yes you can and yes it probably will. If you have paid your insurance in one amount upfront, depending on how many months there are before your renewal, you probably won't get a refund.

If you pay in monthly instalments, you will probably have to pay to cancel your contract.

You also won't earn any no-claims for this year.
