I hold a curent UK paper driving licence, do I need to get it replaced with a photo card one. My paper licence expires in 2017.

NO,you dont have to if you dont want to,but if you need to alter any details on it,ie change of address,removal of points etc,then you will have to.
Currently there is no legislation in place to make the change from paper licences to photocard licences compulsory; it is at present voluntary except where a new licence needs to be issued (change of details, endorsements etc.).

However this may change at some point ahead of the 2017 expiration of your licence.
Yes you will have to get it replaced but at the moment not until 2017 !

Agree with all the above but if you go abroad and want to hire a car the country you are visiting might not accept an old style paper licence.
