The active ingredient in Phenoline when utilised within the body is an element of the thyroid hormones thyroxin & triiodothyronine, which determine the metabolic rate. This affect conversion of food to energy and the way energy is utilised.
The thyroid is involved in protein manufacture, cholesterol synthesis, carbohydrate absorption and the conversion of carotene to vitamin A. Thyroxin is an important regulator of body weight.
ABSORPTION AND METABOLISM
Phenoline is rapidly absorbed from the gut. Excesses are excreted in the urine.
OVERDOSE
Phenolione is sold in 150ug tablets with the recommendation to take two each day. Overdose occurs in qualitites of 2000-3000ug. Symptoms of Phenoline overdose are mainly due to its corrosive effects on the gastrointestinal tract and include abdominal pain, diarrhea & vomiting. Other symptoms may include metallic taste, sore teeth, gum and mouth, and severe headache. Treatment is with large volumes of milk and starch solutions with 1 per cent solution of potassium thiosulfate.
