Sorry LX... just dealing with one person at a time - even I'm getting sick of the sound of my own voice since I seem to be writing way too much. Read mall gods... you're right, that one was one that I quite enjoyed - gods disappearing when no one believes in them is a really interesting idea. I read quite a lot of his books a few years ago, so I think I 'get it' but I just don't find it that funny. As I tried to suggest in the title, I was just feeling a little Machiavellian whn I wrote the question to see if I could get anyone going. Which I think I might have done! As far as Carpe Jugulum is concerned, one of the main characters is Mightily Oats, who's a trainee priest rather than monk. But I maintain that he starts out not very good at what he does but succeeds despite his cowardice. But I retract my comment about Vimes. You are quite correct.
