Truly great managers relish a challenge, are fearless in their decisions, full of self -confidence and want, and get, their own way without interference from owners and boards. And they enjoy making a silk purse out of a sow's ear. They take a team like Porto and get to win things.That guarantees that England won't get a great manager !

The FA will insist upon getting someone who satisfies a committee, won't upset anyone, loves compromise, is an all-round nice bloke, will listen to what they say.......

Mourinho would love it, on his terms.He's just the type. He's no respecter of reputations.When he arrived at Chelsea he said something to the effect that he wanted a team of eleven who he could get to play as a team, not eleven stars and prima donnas (he promptly had a clear out).Brian Clough was the same, and he'd have been a winner as England manager, but we know what the FA thought of him !

Does it really matter?

I do not follow football - can't stand the game. But as an outsider it strikes me that numerous managers have tried and failed to produce a successful England football team.

That being the case, it might be time to examine the players and, in particular, the ridiculous situation where many of players in the top league (where I would expect the best to play) are not eligible to play for England.

Thanks all, I tend to agree with fredpuli above. The FA want a yes man, they don't care if we are teminally *****. They should have had Cloughie, years ago when they appointed Robson. I also think that Mourinho would be teriffic if they gave him carte Blanche. So that won't happen!

Anyway I'm not all that bothered as I'm more of a Rugby man. It'd be nice to win somthing one day though. The WC in 66 is really ony half a world cup, you need to win each game in a foriegn land for it to count as a full one!
