Hotels whilst driving through France
5 Answers
Having a road trip Calais to Bourg saint Maurice France,
Going A26 past Paris, Troyes, Dijon, so on.
Trying to look for hotels on the way, cannot seem to find a good site to plan route with options of hotels, google map only shows a few off the route in the towns.
Any suggestions?
TIA

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about pre-planning hotels; we've driven all over France on spec, never planned a stop in advance, and have never failed to find a hotel room. True, some have been better than others, but none has ever been bad or overpriced. You shouldn't have any trouble at all on the route you're planning. The only publication we've ever used to point the way to a likely hotel is the Rough Guide, and a lot of the time we've just rolled up somewhere that looks pleasant and looked around for a likely looking place to stay. We've only found places full on a handful of occasions - even in the height of summer - and on those few occasions the hotel in question has always recommended somewhere else close by where we've found a bed.
Hope this isnt too late to be of use. I use a route planner called www.mappy.com which is an excellent French based site which gives route info., speed camera locations, exact replicas of road signs etc. If you enlarge any portion of the route map there is an option to highlight nearby hotels which it links to. Contrary to earlier advice, if you are travelling in July/ August, most hotels near to the major routes get fully booked so its essential to book early unless you want to spend half an hour plus just getting to the hotel from the autoroute.
