I haven't travelled in a beetle for many years but I seem to remember that, when I was trying to exit from the back seat, I was told to hang on to a short strap to stop myself going out head first! Nowadays of course, it wouldn't take my weight!

Dustybun i lent my beetle to a mate once
when i got it back the next day i found a pair of high heels in it
one entangled in each strap!
to this day i still havnt fathomed it
