Can you tell me if I had a car MOT tested now and it if it didn't pass would it make the current MOT(which expires in 3 months) invalid?

Your current MoT Cert remains valid as far as I'm aware. It only verifies that your car on a certain date (testing date) passed the the then current MOT legislation.
This has always been a bit of a 'grey' area in my opinion (not that my opinion counts for much!). Possibility that now the Mot is carried out online the loophole might be closed.

The details of the test are recorded electronically and sent to DVLA. The car still has to go in a be physically tested.

Isn't it an offence to drive a car that unroadworthy (eg bald tyres), even if there is a current mot? Not sure what would happen if you were on your way to the test centre, which is allowed with an appointment.

if the car passes an mot it only states that it meests the minimum required standard at that time, it doesnt mean that it will remain that way until the next mot eg bald tyres

Yes, mdoo, you are quite right. But the question was "...would it make the current MoT invalid?" And the answer is no.

The current MoT could still be used to obtain a Road Fund Licence, and it could still be produced to the police if required (making prosecution for no MoT impossible). Prosecution for an unroadworthy vehicle may well occur, but that was not what was asked.

The current state of the vehicle and the validity of the MoT certificate are not linked.

You could try the AA pre MOT test which guarantees if a fault is found on the real MOT and has not been found on this pre test they will pay you up to �650

Thanks to all for your answers.
I know that an MOT pass is not a guarantee for 12 months "road worthiness", in fact a vehicle could be considered "unroadworthy" at anytime after a pass certificate is issued.
I will have to go along with the Judge on this one, although Slack raised a good point about the grey area regarding computerization.
