The clue is:

18a Disheartened dirges composed mournful songs. I have the following letters: D_RG_S. Which makes dirges... but that's in the clue. Does anyone have any thoughts?

It looks like a "bad" clue to me.

Maybe the word in the clue should have been "diggers" not "dirges"?
We too have puzzled over this one, ending with the same letters as you. I looked on The Crossword Solver site and still conclude that the answer is dirges- odd when it's part of the clue! We shall see on Friday.
Sorry just realised we have to wait a little longer than Friday.
