I'm not a sports person and I don't play darts but isn't 20 the highest number on a dart board? So wouldn't double top be 40?

Certainly a bit debatable but it wouldn't be 40 till you throw the dart.So will probably have to go with it.

I don't really understand your thinking. Is that not like saying a bull is worth 50 points but only when someone lands a dart in it ? If top means 20 and double top is twice twenty, then that's what it is whether someone sticks a dart in it or not,

That was my first thought but why in darts? Twenty is double ten, full stop. Why is it necessary to add 'at darts'?
