I recently discovered that i have a fear of meteors (meteorphobia). Everytime i think about a meteor shower or a meteor hitting earth it makes me feel nervous and uncomfortable and makes me think i'm going to die. I read that this is an abnormal phobia, i was wondering if there was any treatment available to help. Also, what phobias do you have and how bad are they?
Cognitive therapy could help you, there are books on it in w h smiths or maybe talk to your doctor. It is a serious fear to you so it doesn't really matter if it is an abnormal fear or not the fact is it affects you. It won't make any difference people telling you it's not going to happen because you won't believe them anyway because it is a real fear. we all worry about things and dread what will probably never happen.
Thanks for that Katie. I just can't go and buy a book on it, if anyone sees me they'll think i'm insaine or stupid. If i talk to my doctor then he's only going to send me off to the mental health centre.
This is whats bothering me, i can't pluck up the courage to do anything, even though it affects everyday of my life.
Fear of infinity is apeirophobia.
Do you think that some people are born with these irrational phobias, or do we develop them from experiences?
I certainly don't know where my phobia came from.
It is strange how we develop phobias. When I was younger I read a lot about astronomy and the universe. I just find it very scary that you can't put a number of years on how long the universe has been in existance and how long it will go on for.
I also have a fear of worm and worm like creatures, however, I'm perfectly ok with spiders and snakes!
my sister has a fear of wars, we only discovered this when the gulf war was on, she panicked and pretty much refused to be in the room when the news was on, years later she barely watches tv
I have a terrible fear of spiders :( i'm not scared of flying and i haven't got a fear of enclosed spaces but i feel very anxious whenever i board a plane.
I think it stems from the fact that some things, like natural disasters we can't control .
Wix you could try looking on W H Smith web site and ordering any books online .
I have a terrible fear of heights. I don't even like standing by the window in a tall building and if they show views from high up on television I have to look away. I also can't drive over large bridges - I just freeze.
The strangest one I read of was a fear of peanut butter getting stuck to the roof of the mouth! I can't remember the proper name for it but there is one, which suggests that there are people with it!
I'm sure a book seller would not see you as insane - think about it all those books they sell on all those subjects - someone will buy them it is no more insane than buying a book say on trains, fishing etc and they don't even know that it's you whos going to be reading it. And to be honest if they have a long queue they are going to be more bothered about getting everyone through the till as fast as possible. Some libraries also have an electronic way of getting books so you could try that you don't even have to show the librarian your book.
And as for the doctor sending you off to the mental health centre he will have heard it all a hundred times before thats why the queues for counselling are so long there is no shame in it whatsoever the doctor will just be pleased you've plucked up the courage to ask for help when it is affecting you so much.
Hope you find something that helps.
