The Opera House, Manchester, has a grand title but was it built for opera and have operas ever been performed there?

I've just had a look at www.manchesteroperahouse.org.uk and there is abrief history of the theatre there.
It opened in 1912 and was originally called The New Theatre.Three years later it was sold to United Theatres Ltd and renamed The New Queen's Theatre.
The wording of the next bit wasn't very clear to me,but I think it became The Opera House in 1920 (August to be precise). It was renamed in honour of Sir Thomas Beecham who had performed there several times between 1916 and 1920.
After WW2 it operated as a cinema for a time and then as a bingo hall.It returned to being a theatre in 1984 and had a major refurbishment in 2003.
