my little brother has just sorted out his moped! he'll need tax, MOT, insurance, L plates. he will also have to take a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) its a days course. try this site, it should help : www.dvla.gov.uk then search for mopeds.. hope this helps!
Make sure he wears gloves lol

The amount of young kids i see without them is shocking
At seventeen he can ride up to a 125cc motorcycle or scooter (after his CBT)

if he intends to get a motorcycle (with gears) then he can do his CBT on one, it will give him a better idea of how to control the machine rather than doing it on a 50cc twist and go moped. The cost should be the same.

Either will do and he could ride a motorcycle upto 125cc after passing the CBT on an automatic but I would recomend the bike with gears for the test if there is a possibility he will want to ride one afterwards

My wife and I both have full bike license and my son passed his CBT on a geared 125 but then chose to buy a 125 vespa!

Hope he enjoys his new found freedom.

Good luck
Hi
Obviously he will need a crash helmet

but so many riders cant be bothered to fasten the strap correctly

I have even seen a lady on a scooter with clogs on -
you know just a strap over the toes - how stupid
gsr600
Vespa's are the way forward, bit of chrome and a couple of mirrors lol
I had a moped.

My dad was a biker, and insisted I wear the full leather gear with full facce helmet, gloves and boots.

I know he was being totally safety-minded, and now I can see why he did it ~ however at the time I thought I looked a right twonk. I was right, too!
I must confess to wearing a tshirt in the summer....
I would recommend a 125cc straight away .50cc mopeds are just too slow to be safe ,they have minimal acceleration and the top speed limited to 30 mph means no get out of trouble power available.
