Honda CRV start up noise

My 2001 Honda CRV makes an awful noise(clanking) when starting up and the air conditioner is not cooling.

Is your air conditioner always on, if it is then the electromagnetic clutch could be permanently engaged and therefore when you start the engine it will try to cut in automatically. If it makes this sound regardless of the air conditioning being on then it is another problem. The air con could be faulty due to a leak ( condenser being most likely due to the grill size of a CRV) and the refrigerant leaked out therefore not cooling. This should not directly cause any noise unless this has caused the clutch to seize up!
