Clue is Was at someone's service or disposal
I have 'haft' for the leafstalk (quote - narrow stalk-like base to some petals), and therefore I've put 'offered' (using the 'f' in haft). Again, very obtuse compiling! One old-fashioned version of 'offer' is to offer in marriage/contract etc, so I've took a chance with this but, as usual, it's 'educated guess time'!
Question Author
Hello Slipnot

Thanks for haft, and I think you are right with offered as Chambers says "to be at hand" which would mean to be at someone's disposal.
What do you think
I agree - two heads and all that! Signing off to recharge the old batteries zzzzzzz!
