I have a friend whose live-in girlfriend has told him he should spend a month's wages on her engagement ring. This is supposed to be an "old tradition". Has anyone else heard of this; it's news to me??

Hey Tony,

I've heard of this before but would not expect anyone to spend a whole month's wages on an engagement ring.

Apart from the fact that I have no intention of getting engaged ever again.

I have told my bf that if we are still together when I'm 80 that I will marry him lol

BB xx
This is the 'traditional' thing to do, but I think its a load of old tripe.

Its not how much the ring costs, but how much sentiment is behind it.

a cheaper ring bought with good intentions and a lot of a thought gone into it, is much better than a big sparkler just so everyone knows that a lot of money has been spent.

expensive does not mean better
by the way, Im engaged and I have a small neat little engagement ring that didnt cost thousands.

I love it because my fiance chose it himself because he knew I would like it!
I got a full carat full eternity ring for 300 quid beat that lol
tbh, i think that any woman who tells her boyfriend what he has to spend on a ring is just being greedy. Does a garish 2000 ring have more love behind it than a carefully chosen 200 ring?

Tell him to buy her the ugliest ring he can and get a fake receipt for a months wages, see if she shows it off to all her mates as being an expensive ring rather than a beautiful token of love
My engagement ring didn't cost my fiance a month's wages, more like 2 weeks I think. He knows I hate big flamboyant jewellery though so I guess I was easy to buy for. He also knew all the best places to buy the from as he was in the trade for years himself so got trade prices.lol.
tony im 24 and yes i have heared it - only because my mad cousin 20 got engaged - the poor bloke spent the month wages on the ring
and yes the engagment is now off
but i have heared it
there used to be an advert on the tv and cinema for debeers diamonds which said how else can a months wages last a lifetime
i had a crap job and my fiancees ring cost me 3 months wages. i wasn't planning on spending that much but i was trawling the jewellery quarter in birmingham and got carried away. the one i picked was like one that she had pointed out to me in a jewellery shop before when we had been looking around together. never been engaged before so wanted to get her a really nice one.
Yes, that is the 'traditional' rule of engagement! However you don't have to. I agree with Lue Clue's words!
Maybe he should remind her that it is also an old tradition that she does all the cooking and cleaning.
