several hundreds of miles into the desert. You could sail to New York or even LA but you'd have to travel overland after that

To be precise, after you have travelled by ship to New York you would have a further 2570 miles to travel overland to Las Vegas!!

Down the Atlantic, through the Caribbean to Panama. Through the canal, turn right to Mexico up to the mouth of the Colorado river. Up there, leaping over a few dams on the way to the bottom of the Hoover Dam. Get off boat and its a mere 15 minute taxi ride into Vegas.
