Why all the fuss ?

The canoe couple Anne & John Darwin are getting more news coverage than murderers and rapists. Six armed police escorted her off the plane in Manchester for goodness sake. On the BBC news at lunch time there was a report of a couple believd to have murdered 4 old people in their care, yet this was just a 2 minute report. OK the Darwins have lied and cheated, conned the insurance companies etc but they have not murdered anyone or kidnapped a child etc. I think that in this world money is more important and I'll bet they will get a tough sentence if found guilty.

I think the reason this is getting so much coverage and police attention is because its a worldwide investigation and an unusual case.

it's about giving the people what they want.
at the moment the darwins are the most interesting story. murders happen all the time and have lost their novelty value.

I would agree that the amount of police sent to arrest Anne Darwin was ridiculus and unnecessary. Surely these police could have been put to better use!

I was wondering why this was such a big story. I thought perhaps, it'd been a big story when he first disappeared, but I couldn't remember it.

If it'd be a story of the same magnitude of (say) Maddie being found five years hence, I could understand it.

I just don't geddit. He ain't Lord Lucan...he's just a bloke who didn't realise that when you pose for a picture for a travel/relocation company in South America, people in England can browse the website.

Must admit, the presence of armed police was a bit of an overkill. I think you're right, puss, where crime is concerned, money does seem to be more important than life. And speaking of money, how much did the employment of all those armed police cost the taxpayer? One ordinary bobby would easily have managed the job.

Typifies the BBC highlight trivia & shrug off the more important issues as trivia.
And as long as we have a hole in our B------- money matters will always carry a longer sentence than the taking of an innocent life.
In Medieval England you were found 6s for murder & a shilling if you committed the offence on Xmas Day but, if you were found guilty of fraud your nose/privates were taken away

I suspect the police were there to protect the suspects from the media scrum rather than to bring them to justice.

This story will run and run. But it is absolutely bizarre.

In fact, the more I think about it, the less surprising it is that it's getting such coverage in the press. For at least the first 5 days, the story took a new twist every day. You can't say the Maddie story has provided that.

In terms of the actual crime, i don't think what they've done is so terrible, they've just been greedy and stupid.They haven't physically hurt any body but what gets to me is what their children must be going through. To go through the grieving process and spent all this time missing their dad only to find their parents lied to them and put them through that pain for financial gain, I can't imagine what that must feel like.
As other's have said it's just the curiosity value of this story that's making it such big news.

I rather assumed the heavy Police presence was to deal with the screaming hoardes of media hacks rather than the Darwins!
