I made a stupid mistake of driving whilst I was drunk and just wondered what I do about my car insurance while I have ben disqualified for 14 months?
can I still insure the car under my name and still have named drivers? or is it not possible to insure under my name now I dont have a driving license?
If you don't tell your insurance company you've been banned then they might invalidate it in the event of a claim. Best just to come clean with them and see what they'll do. Insurance companies all want your premiums.
But then what happens say if the car was stolen etc. can i not insure it third party or something or would the policy have to be in someones name?
I'd ideally like to have the policy in my name and have 2 named drivers, is that not possible??
Also I had 5 years no claims, which I understand now is reduced to 3 according to the insurance co, does this still stand in 14 months time when I want to get cover again?
This actually poses an interesting question. The vehicle can't be parked on the road unless it's insured, but you can't get insurance if you're banned. Catch 22. is it still insured at the moment?
Talk to your insurer and see what they suggest. You might be better off just selling it and getting another one when you get your licence back.
you do have to tell them, but they may let you keep the policy but exclude you from driving- i have seen a few that do this & some that refuse. you would have a job getting an insurer to take you as a new customer on this basis. if they do want to cancel the policy when you tell them, you would have to register & insure the car in somone elses name. your no claim bonus will still be valid in 14 months. with most insurers you can still use it within 2 yrs- a handfull will accept 3 (axa & cornhill)
