I think what you want is (in 2003 or earlier)
open the doc
select all <ctrl+A>
copy <Ctrl+c>
open a new document
(from the menu)
edit | paste special
then chose one of the two unformatted options
or whichever suits you best
with 2007 it's done from the home ribbon
editing | select | select all (far right)
copy (clipboard (far left) (or right click))
then in the new doc
clipboard | paste | paste special (far left)
phew (almost quicker to copy type is again)
